Prediabetes in the life of a Christian

Prediabetes in the life of a Christian needs to be faced honestly by those who believe their bodies are truly the temples where Almighty God dwells.

Good morning, and welcome to this the first of a five day series entitled Prediabetes in the life of a Christian and how we can conquer it without medication from the Church of the Ascension in Hilton, South Africa; a strange title coming from the pulpit, you may be thinking. Humour me for a few minutes.

World view

I keep bumping into the concept, What is your world view? and I have to admit it resonates with me, so on this the first day of our journey with prediabetes, and how to stop it progressing to the full blown disease, which it will do within 10 years if we do not ring in some profound lifestyle changes, on this first day, I share with you of my world view.

My world view is that there are two spiritual domains. The one is the Dominion of Darkness and the other the Kingdom of God’s precious Son. John, the gospel writer tells us that God sent Jesus, his only begotten son, into the world, to bring light and truth, and grace, to set us free from the Dominion of Darkness and to restore us as children of our heavenly father. And ultimately that he did this through his life given on the cross for the whole world as the expiation of our sins.

And this can only be achieved through light, and truth and grace.

Without the light of Christ revealing to us what is of the spirit of truth and that tull ofof error, we can never truly grasp the truth about God, ourselves and yes about evil. And it is only the grace of our Heavenly Father that enables us to take these truths, give them flesh and only as we abide in Him, that we will be set free from the threat of this awful affliction that is type-2 diabetes; chronically raised blood glucose from poor lifestyle choices.

And so it is my prayer that this week only that which is of the spirit of truth will resonate in your heart, bringing you wisdom and understanding of these difficult concepts about food.

And if anything I say is of the spirit of error, may that be revealed to you too.

Kingdom Foods

So my world view of foods is that there are Kingdom Foods, not in great detail but spoken of in Genesis, chapter 1. Foods that God has provided to give us life and health and vitality; so that we can serve him joyfully until the end of our days.

  • Every plant yielding seed
  • Every tree with seed in its fruit
  • Every beast of the earth
  • Every bird of the air
  • Every green plant

And then there are the fake foods from the Devil’s Pantry that are designed to bring us down; poor health, sickly and unable to serve him to the fullness of our ability. Rather, others will have to serve us.

Having said that, life and healthy remain to some extent a mystery. Now we see through a glass darkly. But much is known and not mysterious at all; that’s the power of ethical science.

Energy and Nutrients

Food by definition supplies energy and nutrients to our bodies. Typically you can recognise Devil’s Pantry fake food because it has been stripped of its nutrients. What remains are empty calories that raise our blood glucose. First prediabetes, and then the full blown disease, soon followed by a downward spiral of our health.

You see, chronically and abnormally raised blood glucose is highly inflammatory. The research is unequivocal; it is strongly associated with heart disease, stroke, dementia, pain and suffering in our muscles, joints and all of our organs. We are no longer able to serve God as we would and our lives are cut short long before He intended.

But the good news is that this process, science has clearly proved it, can be entirely reversed. You see I have walked this journey myself; I did not know it but when God placed in my heart some 20 years ago a deep and profound interest in nutrition, it was by his grace that I would myself have to face and be healed of this affliction.

Early signs of prediabetes

In my own life there were three signs that looking back, I now realise were the first indications that all was not well in the state of Denmark. I started putting on weight, I started suffering from severe low back pain and I started losing my marbles. For ten long years I could not even remember my own cellphone number.

I was on the slippery slope; or sinking fast in Bunyan’s allegory; the Slough of Despond. What followed then was a serendipitous discovery that my blood glucose was shooting far too high. I who really, even arrogantly believed that I ate very healthily.

Well the good news, fellow followers of Jesus, our Heavenly Father is able to set us free from the chains that hold us back. I know because since God started to reveal these nutritional truths to me, I have lost 10kg, I have not had a severe attack of lower back pain in several years and best of all, God’s name be praised, I can now rattle off my cell number without the slightest hesitation. Even my memory was restored.

Sloth

Walking reduces blood glucoseWalking reduces blood glucose

But first we have to deal with Bunyan’s Sloth; the first step is to start taking short, brisk walks after any starchy meal, especially supper. That takes the grace of God.

The Devil's Pantry

And so I dare to believe that God has entrusted me with a commission; to help others to recognise the fake meals from the Devil’s Pantry, to return to Kingdom Food and to bring true wholegrain mealiemeal back to our poor stunted children. They alas will never be able to read with understanding and write with proficiency; and it is not primarily the fault of their teachers.

Super refined grains devoid of essential nutrients have permanently disabled their brains. An astonishing 40 children die every single day in SA from a vitamin A deficiency, for example. Children whom God loves and had great plans for, thwarted by being fed on food from the Devil’s Pantry.

How exactly God is going to enable this, I don’t yet know. I am still seeking the way forwards. Perhaps this little series of five talks on prediabetes will be the beginning; the light of Christ revealing new truths to you.

A lone reed shaking in the wind

Sir George calls me Johnny B; a lone reed shaking in the wind. And that I feel, aware that my predecessor lost his head. But it is my prayer that the Spirit of Christ will reveal to you what is truth; and what is error.

Nearly 50% of Americans are prediabetic and I suspect it is little different in South Africa and the rest of the developed world where grocery stores and convenience foods abound. If you are one of them, may this be the start of you regaining your wellness and vitality.

If I may be so bold, may I ask you to walk this pilgrimage with me, weighing these principles in your heart and applying your mind? Let the spirit of the seers be subject to the prophets, enjoins the scripture. Kindly but firmly tell me if you discern these five talks are filled with error.

How to diagnose prediabetes

Tomorrow we will look at how prediabetes is diagnosed and then during the following three days how you too can escape from this affliction. It was a rocky road for me and it will probably be for you too. The Devil prowls like a lion seeking those whom he may devour. Only as we humbly learn to abide in Christ, and he in us can we be restored.

May you have a wonderful day. May it be filled with tidings of great joy, God is with us, but also you may well find, to use Calvin Cook’s words, a member and preacher in this church for many years, that these may be days of walking with a stone in your shoe; days of great irritation until finally you remove it and shake out the offending gravel.

Until tomorrow then, God bless and goodbye.
