How to diagnose prediabetes is part of series on how Christians in particular but of course all of us actually can manage and overcome this disease.
Good morning and welcome again to this short series on how to manage prediabetes; it affects nearly 50% of Americans and it’s probably little different in South Africa. Within five to ten years many will progress to the full-blown disease, oft with tragic consequences.
Yesterday I shared with you my world view that there are two spiritual dimensions; one that the Bible calls the Kingdom of God’s precious Son and the other the Dominion of Darkness. And how sin came first into the world not through sex, power or greed but through food; a “forbidden fruit.”
Today we are going to look at how to diagnose prediabetes but first I’d like to say a few words about what is being called Transcendence, meaning a reality far greater than any one of us. In his new book Martin Prozesky goes into it in some detail; he gives the principle of gravity as one such reality.
Gravity as we know is indeed something much bigger than any one of us; a principle of the universe that our creator God instituted and uses to hold the planets in orbit around the sun, and the moon around the Earth, and to keep us firmly on the Earth.
We all understand that if anyone jumps out of a plane without a parachute he will accelerate towards the centre of the Earth and be crushed. No amount of prayer will save him; he is not “covered by the blood of Jesus;” by jumping out of a plane he is defying God’s law.
Jesus understood this perfectly having been intimately involved in the creation of the universe at the beginning of time; and refused to jump from the temple steeple when wearing his Man-hat and was tempted by the Devil.
Full of the good carbsI’d like to put it to you that food is another of these Transcendent principles; something far greater than one of us and a science that researchers are now beginning to understand in some detail.
In regard to diabetes it is the starches that we are going to be talking about, for they are the chief source of the sugars that can upset the applecart. Back to our worldview, our creator God has put Transcendent, immutable principles in place in these carbs to make them perfectly healthy; and the source of energy that our bodies and brains need to function.
But in the Dominion of Darkness, the Devil has sought to defy these principles as we shall see; and in his cleverness seeks to deceive us with deviant forms of starch that he peddles from what I call the Devil’s Pantry. Forms of starch that actually deprive us of our energy, make us very sick and prevent us from serving our God to the greatest of our abilities. They will distract us to such an extent with many divergent health issues, rob us of joy and paralyse our effectiveness as the children of God.
Defying God’s law of gravity kills very quickly. Breaking His transcendent law of food likewise ends in a premature death but it kills more slowly and painfully; but just as surely.
So how do you diagnose prediabetes. Firstly let me say that I am a doctor of chiropractic, not medicine but because I myself am, or at least was suffering from this condition, I have taken a deep look at the science behind the disease.
But of course consult your medical doctor if you are concerned about things you hear here, or that you may in fact yourself be prediabetic.
Officially incidentally prediabetes has no symptoms; it’s a silent disease which is what makes it so insidious. But looking back at my own health, I can with the benefit of hindsight, now understand things that were beginning to go wrong that were a direct consequence of my chronically raised blood glucose; as I said yesterday that I could no longer remember my own cellphone number.
There are three tests for prediabetes.
The oldest and simplest is called the fasting blood glucose, something I’m sure you’ve all heard of and probably had done. It is cheap but unfortunately has a fairly high degree of what is known as “false negatives.” Many prediabetics are told they are fine, when they are not. And some are told they have the disease when they do not.
A more advanced test is called the A1c. It measures the average blood glucose over a period of about two months; you don’t have to fast and it’s unaffected by whether you were recently ill for example. But it too has unacceptably high false negatives; it may miss that your serum sugar goes too high, or stays up for longer than is desirable.
The current medical view is that the so-called Glucose Tolerance Test is the most reliable. Your finger is pricked before talking a large glass of glucose solution, 30 minutes and one hour later. Such a large dose of sugar is not pleasant, nor good for you, but the GTT has become the gold standard of testing. It’s the right way to go if you want to be sure.
Retrograded starches have a much lower GIThe good news is that prediabetes, and in fact T2D itself can be put completely into remission for most of us unless you have had the disease for a very long time, simply by a radical change of lifestyle. The threat of heart disease, stroke and blindness dwindles and you can look forward to healthy old age with far more confidence; loss of a limb and dementia too.
One thing I will repeat over and again; ad nauseam. The scientists are adamant that any changes of lifestyle that you make, have to be for ever. I mentioned yesterday that the first important step is to start taking a brief brisk walk after any starchy meals. There is no point whatsoever turning over a new leaf for a few weeks or even months. It’s for the rest of your life; or do not begin at all.
"Yo-yoing" causes permanent damage to the kidneys in 40% of diabetics; the aim has to be to get your blood glucose down and keep it within normal levels for ever through a permanent change of lifestyle.
"There is little support for the notion that diets lead to lasting weight-loss or health benefits.
We concluded most would have been better off not going on them at all."

This is deep stuff, fellow followers of Jesus. Rome was not built in a day, nor will you escape from the clutches of food from the Devil’s Pantry in a few short weeks. Look upon this as a journey that you are just beginning. As you abide in Him and he in you, so you will gain the victory over Satan; and his intention that your health should slide irrevocably into misery.
That’s it for today, goodbye until tomorrow; and God bless.
When you are ready and not before, move on to Day 3. How the three types of starches affect prediabetes.
