The Habakkuk Road through the eyes of Lectio Divina

The Habakkuk Road through the eyes of Lectio Divina is just one thirsty man's journey as he accepts the invitation to rise into the heavenly places and sit with God. My portion has been fat, my food rich; yours could be too.

Come walk with me and then make your own journey down the Habakkuk Road; yours no doubt will be quite different as you "take your stand and look forth to see to see what the Lord will say to you."

Habakkuk Lectio Divina

What will he say to me?

It was a complete turn around when I discovered the meaning of the first sign on the Habakkuk Road; what will he say to me should precede my complaints to God.

I will take my stand to watch,
    and station myself on the ramparts;
and look forth to see what he will say to me,
and what I will answer concerning my complaint.

St Paul in the letter to the Ephesians reminds us that we have been invited by the Almighty to come and "sit with him" in the heavenly places[2]. How it changed my devotional life when I began to stand on the ramparts in the early morning watch, looking forward to what he would say to me.

This is the Habakkuk Road; speak Lord, for thy servant heareth.

For Samuel he heard an audible voice. For Habakkuk he "looked forth." It was with spiritual eyes that he "saw" what the Lord would say to him; his marching orders for the day, so to speak.

Faithfulness

Behold, he whose soul is puffed up (not right within him) shall fall,

but the righteous shall live by his faithfulness.

To fulfil the oracle that Habakkuk received whilst standing to watch in the early hours took great faith to proclaim. God spoke to him about the enormous greed of the very rich; and towns built with blood and founded on iniquity.

Habakkuk heard what God spoke to him and in faithfulness prophesied concerning the evil coming upon the wicked. He would not have been popular; worse, an awful day of trouble was coming.

I hear and my body trembles, my lips quiver at the sound.

I will wait quietly for the day of trouble.

Wrongs and troubles

We all can see the troubles around us in which we live; but mostly we are blinded to the wrongs that cause them. But both were revealed to Habakkuk and he was to proclaim them.

Why dost thou make me see wrongs

     and look upon trouble?

In the quietness let us ask God to show us the wrongs, both great and small that are bringing us into trouble. The call here is to you and me; let us put right that which is going to provoke great difficulties in the future.

We can do nothing about the evil rulers of our times but we can look within, asking God to reveal to us the wrongs that we are blinded to, lest he humble us with great troubles.

Spend time in silence before the Lord our God; savour the passages a second and third time allowing the Holy Spirit to convict. Look forth to see what he will say to you.

My Holy One

Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God,

    my Holy One;

We shall not die.

In our minds we firstly need to grapple with the fact that there are many religions and gods but there is only One who can save us from our sin.

And secondly that he is holy; only those whose sins have been covered by the Blood of the Lamb are invited to come and sit with God. Lest we become depressed, this is a lifetime process; first there are big ones of lust, greed and pride.

Then there is the lying tongue; the big and the little "white" lies that are so black.

This tongue that is described as a fire, a world of evil that uncontrolled can engulf the whole course of our lives in flames[3] is also the organ of taste and swallowing food.

The Fall: Sex, greed or power?

It is interesting that sin first came into the world not through sex, greed or a passion for power but via food. The lust of the tongue[3] for the sweet treats from the Devil's Pantry will also engulf the whole course of our health and without a bit, will bring us to an early death, long before our intended time on earth is fulfilled.

Holiness must touch every aspect of our lives; including the food that we feed to Brother Ass. Lectio Divina is a kind of summation of the lives, recognised by the Church Universal of the great saints; Francis of Assisi was one of them. He likened his body to a very stubborn but lovable mule needing a bit to control the tongue.

Now from the mind, Lectio Divina calls us to draw these truths into our hearts. Savour them, looking forth to see what He will say to you.

Spend time dwelling on how Habakkuk calls the Lord his God, "my" holy one. Oh to grasp that He is mine, and I am his.

We truly become one with the Almighty and the hope of eternal life becomes a reality. "We shall not die."
