INSPIRATIONAL BOOKS - Think, laugh and relax.
Think, Laugh and Relax with chiropractor BERNARD PRESTON.
Bernard Preston writes his inspirational books, short stories gleaned from the coalface of a chiropractor's life and work, giving us fascinating glimpses into the professional world of complementary practitioners.
"Complementing medicine," says he, "not complimenting them.
That's something quite different!"

Light-hearted, easy bedside reading, these inspirational books will gladden the hearts of all those who simply loved the genre started by James Herriot with his Vet stories.
Told in humorous vein, Bernard Preston describes the struggle of ordinary people to find better health.
Tired of drugs
and afraid of surgery, they are looking for other answers. Bernard Preston is no fanatic, against neither drugs nor surgery, recognising they are an important part of the health regime, yet finding that Chiropractors can often do it better, more safely and in a shorter time. Not afraid to take the mickey out of medicine,
or out of his colleagues
for that matter, Preston will have you chuckling all the way into your sweet dreams as he paints his word pictures, telling how it is at the chiropractic coalface. Son of two chiropractors, his own daughter a chiropractor, few can tell the inside story of complementary medicine better, or with more charm. Along the way, though, be ready to be challenged, for Preston will call you to that higher place where health is better, and the prospects of old age are to be eagerly looked forward to, rather than dreaded. Says he,
"Don't you want to sit under those trees you once planted
and watch your grandchildren grow up?"

Just go to Our Store. An Aside: Does your Chiropractor go the extra mile for you? Really care, try hard, you know s/he is doing his/her very best to help maintain a nuggety problem? How about a small Christmas gift? A bottle of wine ... or better still a Bernard Preston book! Said wife of one New Jersey chiropractor: I can't predict how fast Tom will read Bats in my Belfry , but last time he read Frog in my Throat non-stop. He hasn't read anything like that for pleasure, cover to cover, as long as I have known him. And of course, if you buy it now, you could read it first!
FROG IN MY THROAT
Surprised when friends described his letter writing as inspiring, Preston modestly started a few short stories nearly a decade ago. Encouraged by the editor of Truth House Publishing
to start writing inspirational books, his first tome,
Frog in my Throat
was published in Johannesburg in 2003, soon finding favour with chiropractors in South Africa and with the general public alike. Amongst these funny and healthful gems, Preston describes the mystery surrounding
whiplash
. Convinced that few people escape whiplash untouched, he had to wait nearly thirty years before scientists were able to prove what he already knew: Whiplash leads unerringly to arthritis of the neck. Why mystery? After many years of treating whiplash patients, who have little or no symptoms after the accident, it was indeed a mystery why 10-20 years later their necks are full of arthritis. Finally, his theories were confirmed by research that lead to the discovery of
Immobilisation Arthritis.

It was only much later that Preston realised there is a complete vacuum of chiropractic writing for the general public. Scanning the shelves of the two of the world's largest bookstores in Chicago and London, he could not find one single book on chiropractic. Locating over 120 books on other disciplines in the complementary health stable, he was energised to start the second of his inspirational books of yarns which was duly published in 2006. Says he,
"Most people still have no idea who a chiropractor is, or what s/he does. And medicine has defended its turf very successfully, albeit illegally and immorally, often spreading lies and slander about the dangers of chiropractic, whilst in its own back garden ... It's time to put the record straight."
BATS IN MY BELFRY
Another three years passed, whilst Preston continued writing, living to the full, and going about a busy practice. Wanting to reach a wider audience, he chose The Pen Press
in the UK for his second book,
Bats in my Belfry.

A man of many hobbies, Bernard Preston sprinkles his inspirational books with hair-raising stories
about his glider
, and time spent contemplating the meaning of life, trout rod in hand, or tramping the heights of the Drakensberg mountains.

Preston's books are beautifully illustrated by Lorraine Harrison. Of Frogs, Bats and now
Tadpoles.
Few conditions challenge and stretch a chiropractor than a difficult low back. In Mrs Boucher's mantrap Preston describes a difficult
Sciatica
that teases and stretches him. Of Mrs Boucher there is no doubt. At eighty she remarries her former husband, not for love but for his money!
In A Bee under the Mitre,
an exerpt from Bats, Preston will keep you laughing as he tells of his love of the African "killer bee", a passion shared by a Bishop in his church. Ever heard of someone who fell pregnant at 49?
STONES IN MY CLOG
Moving to Holland, the third of Preston's (and decidely the last, says he) inspirational books,
Stones in my Clog,
is nearing completion. Tracing his chiropractic odyssey through Holland on his bicycle, he inadvertently makes a buffoon of himself on television, after making exciting new discoveries in the rapidly expanding chiropractic galaxy. You will love this third of his inspirational books. Says chiropractor Emma Maria Nygren:
I am looking forward to your third book, Dr Preston. I really enjoyed reading Frog and Bats! They make you think, laugh and relax just like a good book should!
Few things will embarrass a chiropractor more than asking about the origins of his profession. Myth has it that Chiropractic's founder cured a deaf man by manipulating his midback. High critical of DD Palmer's claim, Preston attends a course in Holland, learning how to treat the
Jaw Joint.
Nobody is more astonished than Preston himself when a patient claims to have been cured of deafness after Preston treats his jaw. Read more in
Perhaps DD did it after all.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Bernard Preston's fourth book,
A Family Affair
, is also nearing completion. A completely different kettle of fish, this book is more complex, in a quite quite distinct genre. It will certainly titillate and perhaps enrage you, especially if you are religious! You certainly won't put the book down. A Family Affair will probably be first published as an e-book later this year. You can enjoy the opening chapters elsewhere on this site.
Says Dr Tom Rapp of Preston's books:"I’m bleary eyed this am! Your book, Bats in my Belfry, has kept me up half the night! My wife is complaining about you, she can’t ever remember me doing that before. It’s a pot boiler!"
FAITH JOURNEY
Although Bernard Preston's inspirational books are not religious in nature, he openly acknowledges that he is a Christian. Without any strong denominational ties, he is a layminister in the Anglican Church, but has for periods of his life worshipped in widely different denominations. In fact, he is strongly anti-denominationalism. Says he, "I have no doubt that we Christians will one day discover to our horror that we are all heretics, deserving nothing less than a burning at the stake, should correct doctrine be all-important. And there are certainly going to be some surprises when we reach the pearly gates as to who has got it 95% right, and who has been lingering at 65% for much of their walk of faith."In places he does indeed share his struggle to find higher ground. In particular that place where, like their Lord, Christians are less judgemental and more tolerant of their fellow heretics. For more about Bernard Preston's faith journey,
